How to use your 1RM in training

Your 1RM tells you how heavy to train. For strength you usually work between 80 and 90% of your 1RM for 3 to 6 reps. For muscle growth you work around 65 to 80% for 6 to 12 reps.

Your 1RM is not a fixed number: it goes up as you get stronger. That is why the Stren app tracks your estimated 1RM per exercise automatically from every set you log, with a chart that shows it climbing.

Tips for a reliable estimate

FAQ

What is a 1RM?

Your 1RM (one-rep max) is the heaviest weight you can lift exactly once with good form. It is used to plan training weights as a percentage.

How accurate is a calculated 1RM?

Up to about 10 reps the estimate is reliable. The more reps, the larger the error, so use a hard set of 3 to 8 reps for the best estimate.

Which formula does this calculator use?

Brzycki up to 10 reps and Epley above that. If you enter an RPE, your reps in reserve are taken into account. It is the same calculation the Stren app uses.

Should I actually test my 1RM?

No. A true max attempt is demanding and carries risk. An estimate from a set of a few reps is usually more than enough to plan your training.
